Pure Breed

The Virtual World Grooming Competition for Pure Breed Trim Styles on Model Dogs allows competitors to show their skills and knowledge about pure breeds and their distinct trim styles. 

 

The competitions conducted four times a year award the IJA Virtual World Grooming Competition Competitors and Judges the Top Dog Awards

 

The first competition introduced in November 2020 introduces the new online system to competitors and judges with in-depth evaluations of the IJA Trim Style By Coat Type Certifications using model dogs. The November Series of Competitions also qualifies individuals and team members for the 2021 new and exciting online competition year.  

 

The Model Dog Pure Breed Competitions are designed by coat types and trim styles in each coat type category.

Individual Entry

The Best Canine Stylist in Show in Pure Breed Trim Styles 

Compete with all colors of model dogs to achieve the pure breed trim styles. 

  • The individual competitor can compete in one or all classes to win Best in Show. 

  • The individual competitor may submit more than one entry in a specific coat type category to achieve best in class to be eligible for Best in Show in Pure Breeds with Model Dogs. 

 

The Best All-Around Canine Stylist in Show in Pure Breed Trim Styles
  • To be eligible for Best All-Around in Show, the individual competitor must compete in one Poodle Class and three Pure Breed Classes with model dogs.  

  • The individual competitor may submit more than one entry in the coat type - trim style categories to achieve a first, second, or third placement to be eligible for the show’s Best All-Around. The top placements are utilized from each class to calculate the Best All-Around competitor in the show.

 

 The Best Canine Stylist in Show in Poodle Trim Styles 
  • To be eligible for Best in Show in Poodle Trims Style on Model Dogs, the individual competitor must compete in three Poodle Classes.

  • The individual competitor may submit more than one entry in a Poodle class to achieve a first, second, or third placement to be eligible for the prestige title of the Best Poodle Groomer in the Show on Model Dogs.

 

The Best All-Around Canine Stylist in Show in Poodle Trim Styles
  • To be eligible for Best in Show in Poodle Trims Style on Model Dogs, the individual competitor must compete in three Poodle Classes.

 

The individual competitor may submit more than one entry in a Poodle class to achieve a first, second, or third placement to be eligible for the prestige title of the Best Poodle Groomer in the Show on Model Dogs.

  • Each team member must compete in the four pure breed coat type classes.

The Best State Team in Show in Pure Breed Trim Styles
  • The State Team Members must compete in the required four Pure Breed Classes and the two Poodle Classes to be eligible for Best State Team in Show in Pure Breed Trim Styles on model dogs.

 

 The Best All-Around State Team in Show in Pure Breed Trim Styles
  • The State Team Members must compete in the required four Pure Breed Classes and the two Poodle Classes to be eligible for Best All-Around State Team in Pure Breed Styles in Show on model dogs.

 

The Best State Team in Show in Poodle Trim Styles 
  • The State Team Members must compete in two Poodle Classes to be eligible for Best State Team in Poodle Trim Styles in Show on model dogs.

CLASS RULES: PURE BREEDS - MULTITUDE COAT TYPES

This class includes all pure breeds with many coat types not included in the wire, sporting, and curly coat type class categories. This class category is perfect for the novice to start competitions to learn the structure of body types and natural coat growth patterns.

Exceptions to the Rule

CLASS RULES: PURE BREEDS - SPORTING COAT TYPES

This class includes pure breeds with sporting and specific breeds with medium long coat types. Examples of pure breeds included in this class are the Irish Setter, Springer Spaniel, and Cocker Spaniel.

CLASS RULES: PURE BREEDS - WIRE COAT TYPES

This class includes all pure breeds with broken, scruffy, or tight wire coat types that require hand stripping techniques for the show trim and clipping techniques for the alternative for pet trims. Examples of breeds included in this class are the West Highland White Terrier, Wire Haired Dachshund, and the Irish Wolfhound. Coat Types: 

  • Tight Wire 

  • Scruffy Wire 

  • Broken 

 

Exceptions to the Rule 

Pure breeds are placed in different coat type classes due to their trim styles. Reference the IJA Pure Breeds Coat Type and Classes Chart.

 

CLASS RULES: PURE BREEDS - CURLY COAT TYPES

This class includes all pure breeds with curly coat types, except for the Poodle, that requires scissoring the coat to create the proper expression and profile. Examples of breeds included in this class are the Bichon Frise, Portuguese Water Dog, Irish Water Spaniel, and the Kerry Blue Terrier.

CLASS RULES: INDIVIDUAL PURE BREEDS - POODLE

Class designed for the Poodles. All Poodle trim styles are permitted. Poodles with a scissored face, such as a teddy bear face, are not allowed and must compete in the Creative Competitions. 

 

Face

The cheeks and throat areas must be clipped short. A mustache and beard are permitted, but no scissored faces.

Corded Coat

Corded coat trim styles on Poodles permitted in this class. 

 

Prep Procedures Allowed

Tools, glue guns, and material required to change the head, ear, body, leg, feet, and tail types can create correct pure breed profiles.

  • Head and neck may be re-set to create proper length.

  • Eyes may be replaced and reset to create proper eye set and expression.

  • Ears may be re-set or modified to create the correct ear set and carriage.

  • Body modified to create the correct body type.

  • Legs shortened or lengthened to create the correct body type.

  • The tail reset or modified to achieve the correct tail set and carriage.

 

PRODUCTS - DECORATIVE ITEMS - DOG MANNEQUIN

Pure Breed Classes

Products

  • Bands and bows to secure tie-up on breeds such as Shih Tzu permitted.

  • Sprays and products to hold the coat in place and to give volume and texture permitted.

 

Decorative Items

  • No decorative items except typical of conformation ring: Example: Tie Up or Bows

 

Additional Wigs

  • Model dog coat banded to create extensions to create length and volume permitted.

 

Coat Color

  • Full color is encouraged to achieve the correct shade for the breed and to enhance overall expression and profile on a pure breed trim. 

 

Additional Wigs

TOOLS & TECHNIQUES

  • Clippers and blades

  • Snap-on combs or blade attachments

  • Scissors, thinners, and chunkers

 

COMPETITORS PRESENTATION AFTER COMPETITION

  • Competitors must remove all hair, products, and tools from the table and place table covering for judging.

  • Team members must furnish table covering to match team uniforms.

  • Degree of Difficulty of Trim Style

  • Professionalism

IJA Members Receive More than A Placement
Members receive access to their IJA Portfolio with evaluations, rank, and scores with before and after photos of all entries.
 
All competitors must be registered members of IJA to compete in online competitions and to be part of the voting community on IJA Top Dog of the Year Awards.
 
The IJA Membership and Annual Update Fee is $45.00.
