Show your skills and knowledge about Pure Breed Trim Styles in the IJA Virtual World Grooming Competitions on model dogs. Enter the online-only competition series to achieve the ultimate expressions, profiles, and coat color. Win the best canine styling specialists in the show in pure breed trim styles on model dogs! 

 

The VWGC championship events are conducted by IJA four times a year. The Best in Class and Best in Show finalists from the spring, summer, fall, and winter sessions are finalists for Best in the World in Pure Breed Trim Styles at the IJA Virtual World Grooming Competition TOP DOG virtual awards event in December. 

 

There are four coat type classes and four Poodle classes offered at each session.

CLASS RULES: PURE BREEDS - MULTITUDE COAT TYPES

This class includes all pure breeds with many coat types not included in the wire, sporting, and curly coat type class categories. This class category is perfect for the novice to start competitions to learn the structure of body types and natural coat growth patterns.

CLASS RULES: PURE BREEDS - SPORTING COAT TYPES

This class includes pure breeds with sporting and specific breeds with medium long coat types. Examples of pure breeds included in this class are the Irish Setter, Springer Spaniel, and Cocker Spaniel.

CLASS RULES: PURE BREEDS - WIRE COAT TYPES

This class includes all pure breeds with broken, scruffy, or tight wire coat types that require hand stripping techniques for the show trim and clipping techniques for the alternative for pet trims. Examples of breeds included in this class are the West Highland White Terrier, Wire Haired Dachshund, and the Irish Wolfhound. Coat Types: 

  • Tight Wire 

  • Scruffy Wire 

  • Broken 

 

Exceptions to the Rule 

Pure breeds are placed in different coat type classes due to their trim styles. Reference the IJA Pure Breeds Coat Type and Classes Chart.

 

CLASS RULES: PURE BREEDS - CURLY COAT TYPES

This class includes all pure breeds with curly coat types, except for the Poodle, that requires scissoring the coat to create the proper expression and profile. Examples of breeds included in this class are the Bichon Frise, Portuguese Water Dog, Irish Water Spaniel, and the Kerry Blue Terrier. 

 

Exceptions to the Rule 

Pure breeds are placed in different coat type classes due to their trim styles. Reference the IJA Pure Breeds Coat Type and Classes Chart.

 

CLASS RULES: INDIVIDUAL PURE BREEDS - POODLE

Class designed for the Poodles. All Poodle trim styles are permitted. Poodles with a scissored face, such as a teddy bear face, are not allowed and must compete in the Creative Competitions.

The cheeks and throat areas must be clipped short. A mustache and beard are permitted, but no scissored faces.

Corded coat trim styles on Poodles permitted in this class. 

 

Prep Procedures Allowed

Tools, glue guns, and material required to change the head, ear, body, leg, feet, and tail types can create correct pure breed profiles.

  • Head and neck may be re-set to create proper length.

  • Eyes may be replaced and reset to create proper eye set and expression.

  • Ears may be re-set or modified to create the correct ear set and carriage.

  • Body modified to create the correct body type.

  • Legs shortened or lengthened to create the correct body type.

  • The tail reset or modified to achieve the correct tail set and carriage.

  • Bands and bows to secure tie-up on breeds such as Shih Tzu permitted.

  • Sprays and products to hold the coat in place and to give volume and texture permitted.

 

Decorative Items

  • No decorative items except typical of conformation ring: Example: Tie Up or Bows

 

Additional Wigs

  • Model dog coat banded to create extensions to create length and volume permitted.

 

Coat Color

  • Full color is encouraged to achieve the correct shade for the breed and to enhance overall expression and profile on a pure breed trim.
